Fought on 14 October 1066 between Duke William of Normandy
and Harold Godwinson, king of England, the outcome of
the battle of Hastings irrevocably changed the course
of English history. The fate of the crown resting on one
engagement, Hastings was also decisive in another way:
the horrendous casualties suffered by the English nobility
both there and at the two earlier battles of Fulford and
Stamford Bridge resulted in there being very few men influential
enough to lead an English resistance once William had
been crowned. William would survive long enough to successfully
found a Norman dynasty
of English kings.

The Normans
Despite the small geographic extent of Normandy its people
played a crucial role in
the history of the medieval world. Ferocity, boundless energy,
cunning and a capacity for leadership were their heritage,
to which modern scholars would add supreme adaptability
and a simple piety. Their amazing military successes resulted
from careful planning, speed of movement, decisiveness,
daring and sheer ruthlessness. Added to this was a strong
business sense and an appreciation of the value of money.
Veteran Osprey author David Nicolle describes
the history, arms and armour of the remarkable Normans
in this fascinating volume.

Everyone in England knows the date 1066, for
in that year England changed forever. Most will connect 1066 with
the Battle of Hastings but Hastings was the culmination of a series
of major events that had taken place that year. When the saintly
and childless King Edward died, the king's council, the Witan,
gathered to elect a new king. Finding no suitable member of the
Royal Family, they decided to make Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex,
the new king. Of Danish Royal blood through his mother, he had
in fact been effectively running the kingdom for several years.

Harold faced a challenge to
his new throne from the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada. Harald
invaded the north of England with a fleet of 360 longships manned
by men from all over the Viking world. King Harold Godwinson marched
200 miles in six days and caught the Viking army off guard and
killed Hardrada and most of his men. A mere 24 ships were needed
to take the survivors home.
Whilst celebrating the victory feast news was given to Harold
that another challenger had landed: William the Bastard, Duke
of Normandy. Harold gathered the remnants of his army and rapidly
marched south to meet the new threat.
Outside Hastings, with reinforcements still arriving, the English
army was defeated, King Harold died and with him fell his household
troops and the flower of the English nobility.
The Norman Conquest begun on 14 October 1066 with William's victory
at Hastings, but it was many years before William could claim
to hold England; to his dying day his grip on the throne remained
under threat.
This book contains the key papers from the Wendlewulf Production's
CD-ROM on the topic.

The story of the Norman
Conquest of England does not begin in 1066. Rather, it begins
with events that happened during the reigns of King Knute
the Mighty, in England and Duke William the Bastard, Duke
of Normandy. The Norman Conquest was a pivotal event in
English history and all subsequent developments in the English
monarchy, English government, society, language and outlook
are coloured by it. |

he assumes the persona of "The Old Man" and tells stories

Many of those who have seen Geoff perform have asked for a permanent
reminder of those "tall tale tellings",
so here it is! |

Foreword
This book is the result of the tangled woven web of Wyrd.
I give lectures and talks in early English history, here
in New Zealand. As a result I get invited to Medieval banquets
to tell stories of old England and the English.
I was/am a Rocker and despite the passing of the years there
is still an extensive network formed around those of us
who hung out at Mordon. One of the Rocker Birds, Twink,
had read my two published novels and then been amused by
some of the scripts for my medieval banquet tales. She felt
that there was a demand for old English tales written for
youngsters and asked me to write one for her. Given a bit
of local knowledge of the area, I decided to base it in
Wimbledon, London. Another Bird, Yvonne, worked at Wimbledon
and was able to update me on the shops and the current layout
of the Broadway. |

One of the Lads, Gum, regularly
visits an ex-neighbour near the windmill on Wimbledon Common
and was able to give me information that I needed for this
area. Looking for photographs, I came across the Web site
of Dr Ian Howard. Ian has been helpful with more than just
photos.
Beowulf is the longest existent poem in Old English. The
date that it was composed is unknown, as is that date when
the oral version was first written down. Whilst much of
the story it tells can be regarded as legend, it includes
historically verifiable incidents, thus shewing that even
the 'legend' part of the tale may well have a historical
foundation.
I have refused to avoid long or old words. As a boy my teachers
never avoided them; they pointed me towards a dictionary!
Through their teaching I have a large word-hoard and am
aware of the great heritage that I have in the English language.

Foreword
When we read 'primary sources' we find that the Chronicler
Bede, the writers of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and
the Welsh writer Nennius all say that the first of
the English to arrive and then forcibly take land
from the Britons were led by a man named Hengest.
The area Hengest and his band took over was Kent and
Bede tells us that this area was settled predominantly
by the Jutes who came from what is now Denmark. Was
Hengest a Jute? Well maybe he was and maybe he wasn't. |

That great scholar
JRR Tolkien thought that there was a good case for
Hengest being an Angle, and therein lies a tale which
this book attempts to tell.
In addition to the primary sources, Hengest is mentioned
in the poem 'Beowulf and in another poem that we only
have a part of and is known as 'The Finnsburg Fragment'.
In his time Hengest was obviously toasted in the mead
halls of northern Europe as a hardhitting hero.
As in the first story of the series, 'Big Bold Beowulf,
I have refused to avoid long or old words…
